Researching your future career requires a more comprehensive approach. Understanding the job market in your geographic region, the culture and overall mission of the industry of interest, the salary implications, and the job requirements and duties are key. How do you begin?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When researching an industry (for example, the health care industry), pay attention to the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Industry growth or decline.<\/li>\n<li>Industry culture.<\/li>\n<li>Main employers.<\/li>\n<li>Location of employers (Are they concentrated in a specific region? Is that a region you\u2019d be willing to move to?).<\/li>\n<li>Recent technology\/innovations.<\/li>\n<li>Buzzwords.<\/li>\n<li>Required skills, education, or licensure for the career field.<\/li>\n<li>Market outlook for occupation (can vary by location).<\/li>\n<li>Average salary for occupation (can vary by location).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>Industry Research Strategies and Tools<\/h4>\n<p>Finding this information can be accomplished in many ways. Here are a few suggestions to get you started.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Search for information <\/strong>about industries and occupations including work tasks, employment\u00a0trends, job titles, and salary information\u00a0using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onetonline.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">O*NET<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mynextmove.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">My Next Move<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wetfeet.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wetfeet,<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.careerinfonet.org\/default.asp\" target=\"_blank\">America&#8217;s Career OneStop<\/a>,\u00a0and the Bureau of Labor Statistics&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bls.gov\/ooh\/\" target=\"_blank\">Occupational Outlook Handbook<\/a>. These are reputable websites that contain the most up-to-date industry news and information.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/stgwww.capella.edu\/blogs\/cublog\/tips-for-a-successful-informational-interview\/\">Conduct informational interviews<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0with professionals working in the field to learn about typical work responsibilities, common career paths, and how to break into the field.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>One of the best ways to find out if a specific career or industry is going to be a good fit for you is to <strong>try it <\/strong>in some way. Some suggestions include:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Volunteer<\/strong>. Explore volunteering in a related role to determine if you enjoy the tasks and responsibilities of the occupation. You will gain relevant experience and meet new contacts. It could even help you get a job\u2014a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalservice.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/upload\/employment_research_report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">2013 study by the Corporation for National and Community Service<\/a> found people who volunteer are 27% more likely to find a job than those who don\u2019t.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Part-Time Job or <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/stgwww.capella.edu\/blogs\/cublog\/3-myths-about-adult-internships\/\"><strong>Internship<\/strong><\/a>. Take on a part-time job or participate in an internship in your industry to gain exposure and experience.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Job Shadow<\/strong>. Observe professionals in their work setting as they perform their duties to gain an up-close and realistic appraisal of that occupation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Review postings <\/strong>on websites like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indeed.com\" target=\"_blank\">Indeed<\/a> to determine common skills, qualifications, and keywords.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Join an industry or professional association<\/strong> to learn about current events and best practices. Explore association websites and subscribe to listservs or newsletters to stay current in the field.
