Capella University has invested in a competency-based learning approach throughout the university, including the School of Business and Technology.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.capella.edu\/faculty\/bio\/dr-shelley-robbins\/1226004\/\">Shelley Robbins<\/a>, PhD, faculty chair of Leadership and Human Resource Management in Capella\u2019s School of Business and Technology, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.capella.edu\/faculty\/bio\/laura-sankovich\/1226035\/\">Laura Sankovich<\/a>, lead faculty for undergraduate Human Resource programs, share more on how CBE is defined and aligned with industry guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>What Is Competency-Based Education?<\/h4>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shrm.org\/pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Society for Human Resource Management<\/a> (SHRM), a competency is \u201ca <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shrm.org\/HRCompetencies\/PublishingImages\/14-0705%20Content%20Validation%20Study%203.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">cluster of knowledge, skills, abilities<\/a>, and other characteristics (KSAOs) needed for effective job performance.\u201d CBE focuses on acquiring and developing those characteristics, as opposed to the more traditional academic format, which focuses on credit hours and number of years, to gain a degree or certification.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTraditionally, universities have not defined the expected abilities or outcomes developed by graduates, nor do they ensure abilities are learned, assessed, and acquired,\u201d says Sankovich. \u201cEducational impact is not easy to gauge.\u201d But competency-based education\u2019s focus on skills and abilities creates a different metric, one that\u2019s easier to evaluate\u2014and one that can immediately be of benefit to employers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Why Is CBE Gaining in Popularity with Employers Who Need to Hire Staff?<\/h4>\n<p>\u201cEmployers want employees who can hit the ground running,\u201d says Sankovich. \u201cBefore they start the hiring process, they create a description of what they want in terms of those KSAOs in an ideal candidate. They know what skills they\u2019re looking for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robbins agrees. \u201cThey want to hire people with competencies,\u201d she says. \u201cAt Capella, each HR class has defined competencies. The students\u00a0have a dashboard, or a <a href=\"http:\/\/stgwww.capella.edu\/blogs\/cublog\/measure-learning-with-capella-university-competency-map\/\">competency map<\/a>, that allows them to see what competencies they\u2019re developing, and they can share that with potential employers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>How Does Capella Deliver CBE?<\/h4>\n<p>\u201cWe break down each course into units that focus on specific skills or knowledge,\u201d says Sankovich. \u201cThese units build relationships between the theoretical models in HR and business, along with the outcomes employers demand. We also do assessments to determine mastery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There is another delivery mechanism through Capella, as Robbins points out. \u201cWith our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.capella.edu\/flexpath-self-paced-learning\/\">FlexPath<\/a> option, students can master competencies on their own timeframe. It\u2019s great for working professionals. We can help them acquire the competencies they need for a new job, or to change jobs. There\u2019s also an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shrm.org\/academicinitiatives\/aol\/employers\/pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Assurance of Learning Assessment<\/a> [offered by SHRM] for students without HR work experience, to demonstrate their mastery of competencies in HRM that they\u2019ve gained through their coursework. Students who have already gained competencies through their work experience can use them to petition for credit through our Prior Learning Assessment process, and they can also get credit which can be applied to their degree.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>What Competencies Are Taught in the HR Programs at Capella? What Skills Will Students Develop That Can Be Used Immediately in the Workplace?<\/h4>\n<p>\u201cWe teach our students about the theories behind good HR practices,\u201d Sankovich says, \u201cbut then they get to experience hands-on training through Capella\u2019s CapraTek simulations in their HR courses. In these simulations, they use what they\u2019ve learned to do various HR functions as if they were in the workplace already. They also go out into the field and observe people doing these jobs and learn about the pros and cons of different approaches and methods. This way, they learn real-world skills they must know to work in HR.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Students will acquire knowledge in several key HR roles such as benefits and compensation, training and development, recruitment and staffing, and employment law, which are included in simulations. What\u2019s more, they\u2019re learning and experiencing these simulations from a faculty comprised entirely of HR scholars and practitioners. \u201cBecause we\u2019re all scholars-practitioners, we understand both the theory and how it works in real life,\u201d says Sankovich.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Does Capella\u2019s Curriculum and CBE Approach Align with Industry Guidelines and Expectations?<\/h4>\n<p>\u201cIt couldn\u2019t align better,\u201d says Sankovich. \u201cOur programs are fully aligned with SHRM recommended guidelines.
