$500 Refer a Friend Scholarship

Help a friend take a big step toward their goals. New or returning students may qualify for a $500 scholarship when referred by a current student or graduate of Capella.

How the Capella Refer a Friend Scholarship works

If you’re a student or graduate of Capella University, it’s easy to give someone you know the opportunity to save on tuition.

1. Capella student or graduate shares link

A student or graduate of Capella requests a Refer a Friend link and shares it with friends.

2. Friend activates link and applies

A friend uses the Refer a Friend link to create their account and apply for admission to Capella.

3. Must meet eligibility requirements

If the applicant is eligible for the scholarship, a $500 credit is applied to their first course tuition.

Eligibility requirements for the $500 Refer a Friend Scholarship

All applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements to qualify for the $500 Refer a Friend Scholarship.

Must be a new student in good standing

To qualify for the Refer a Friend Scholarship, you must be a new student applying for the first time or a former student reapplying to the university. You must be accepted into and enrolled in an eligible program in the GuidedPath or FlexPath learning format at Capella University by January 2022.*

All new and returning applicants must meet Capella admission requirements.

*Certificate applicants are not eligible.

Former students may apply

To be considered a former student reapplying to the university, the student must not be currently enrolled in the university and meet one of the following criteria:

  • Graduate of a Capella certificate or a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree program in the GuidedPath or FlexPath learning format.
  • Discontinued from the university for over four quarters.
  • Administratively withdrawn from the university.
  • Program of prior admittance to the university has been restaged or retired.
  • Applying to a program at a different degree level than program of prior admittance.
  • Capella University and its affiliates’ (Strayer University, Devmountain, Hackbright Academy and Strategic Education, Inc.) faculty and staff, their spouses, domestic partners and dependent children are not eligible for the Capella Progress Reward.

Must be referred before starting classes

All applicants to the Refer a Friend scholarship must be referred prior to starting classes.

Must meet academic standards

All applicants must meet the following academic standards to qualify for the Refer a Friend Scholarship:

  • Adhere to all applicable Capella University policies, including but not limited to academic standing (3.01.04 Academic Standing) and financial aid satisfactory academic progress (3.01.05 FASAP).
  • Must successfully pass your first course upon first attempt. Returning students must pass first course taken upon readmission to Capella.
  • Recipients who do not remain enrolled through the first two weeks of the quarter will forfeit the award for that quarter.
  • Recipients who change to an ineligible program, graduate, discontinue or withdraw from Capella will have all future disbursements canceled.

How the Refer a Friend Scholarship affects program costs

  • The Student/Alumni $500 Referral Scholarship can be applied only to an eligible doctoral, master’s, or bachelor’s program in the GuidedPath or FlexPath learning format. The $500 will be applied to your Capella account during the third week of the first quarter or billing session.
  • In some circumstances, Capella quarterly tuition may be lower than a quarterly disbursement. In other cases, recipients may complete their programs before they receive all quarterly disbursements. Under no circumstances will recipients be eligible for cash payment or other compensation for the value of unused disbursements.

  • Recipients of the Student/Alumni $500 Referral Scholarship are not eligible for other Capella grants, scholarships, or discounts in excess of 15%, with the exception of a Capella Progress Reward, if applicable. Students receiving a TAAP (Tuition Assistance Aligned Pricing) through a partnership between Capella and the students’ employer are not eligible for this award.
  • The scholarship may decrease the amount of funding that can be offered from other sources, such as federal financial aid.
  • The scholarship is intended to address the cost of attendance, including but not limited to tuition.*

*Books, supplies and other fees apply. Travel expenses for residencies, practicum, etc., are not covered by the scholarship.

Refer a Friend disbursement information

If a new or returning applicant qualifies for the Refer a Friend Scholarship, $500 will be applied to their Capella account during the third week of the first quarter or billing session.
